Through the Arts for All  Residency Grant Program, arts programming is “delivered” directly into classrooms across the County.  We are providing matching funds totaling $121,729 to 13 Los Angeles County school districts for artist residencies during the current school year. At the end of last year’s residencies, teachers commented on the effects of the program including improvement in students’ focus, attention memory and self-esteem as well as the many ways arts skills transfer to other subject areas. Teachers also believed that the students’ behaviors and grades improved.

Congratulations to this year’s mash-up of districts and arts providers on behalf of student learning!

Arts for All’s partner, Arts for LA, continues to play a leadership role in building support for arts education around the County.

Last month, Arts for LA helped to promote the launch of the LA Fund’s Arts Matter campaign as part of the Fund’s larger fundraising efforts to support arts education in LAUSD schools. Arts for LA  was also instrumental in helping to shepherd LAUSD Board Member Nury Martinez’s resolution to restore arts education in all city schools. On October 9, the LAUSD School Board unanimously passed the resolution, re-affirming the district’s commitment to the arts.

Also in October, Arts for LA collaborated with the Lennox Arts & Culture Committee and the student-run Art Club at the Lennox Math, Science &Technology Academy to produce a combination Big Draw LA event (a city-wide celebration of the act of drawing) and voter registration drive.  A large crowd of neighborhood families were on hand to draw, color, and doodle on a huge shared paper canvas, while student volunteers assisted with voter registration efforts.  The event supported one of the objectives of the Lennox Cultural Plan: to engage the community in art. It also fostered leadership skills in the 25 students in the Art Club, who, as young arts advocates, are passionate about their desire to give back to the community. More events will be scheduled as part of this effort to demonstrate the positive impact the arts can have on building community, inspiring volunteering, and increasing parental involvement in schools.
